Hybrid Power System for a School

Anglobal is an Angolan capital engineering company and ComAp´s distributor in the region. Founded in 2003, it operates in the Telecommunications and Energy sector.
The main objective of this project was to enable parallel operation of the newly installed photovoltaic power plant at the Luanda International School with the existing mains connection and diesel gen-sets, which used to be operational only in an island mode. Due to frequent grid power outages the school was often powered by the back-up diesel gen-sets, which fuel consumption contributed significantly to the high operating expenses.

The scope of supply was the integration of various power resources which enabled parallel operation of the PV power plant with the mains and the diesel gen-sets, aiming at fuel consumption reduction.

First, all the three diesel gensets (404kW prime power each) were equipped with the InteliGen-NT-BB controllers to enable synchronization between each other and with the mains. Then the communication with the 33 Fronius Symo Inverters was established through the Fronius DataManager over Modbus RTU (RS485) and ComAp´s hybrid microgrid controller, the InteliSys-NTC-Hybrid, which ensured the operability of all the resources at once, including the PV curtailment ability. At last, a SCADA system for remote monitoring and control was installed.

This was the first hybrid project of such an extent for Anglobal and the support of Vladimir Maly from ComAp was invaluable. We struggled quite a bit to efficiently integrate the PV system with the Hybrid controller, with the required control level, as we could not allow any power to be exported to the grid, as this is not allowed as per Angolan law. In the end, through perseverance, we managed to get the system to work flawlessly with very acceptable response times.
