Power System for a Gold Mine

African Barrick Gold’s Bulyanhulu mine is located in northwest Tanzania, East Africa, approximately 55 kilometres south of Lake Victoria and approximately 150 kilometres from the city of Mwanza.

Bulyanhulu is an underground trackless operation that uses long-hole and drift-and-fill as its principal stoping methods. Ore reserves are accessed via a surface shaft and an internal ramp system. The processing plant consists of a crushing and grinding circuit, a copper/gold/silver flotation circuit, a tailings thickening/filtration circuit and a tailings storage facility. This major gold mine relies on 15 InteliGen NT with gen-sets organized in 3 groups - 5x 630kW, 5x 630kW, 5x 1300kW, set up to provide a permanent parallel operation with 220kV grid in Import-Export mode due to inadequate grid supply for the whole operation.
